Foreign Language
Learning to communicate with people from other parts of the world, and valuing cultural differences are critical components of 21st Century Education. Therefore, Charlotte Prep is committed to preparing its students with an age-appropriate mastery of a foreign language. To create the richest possible learning opportunities, our curriculum focuses on Spanish.
Every Charlotte Prep student begins Spanish classes in Kindergarten, after receiving introductory lessons in Early School. Classes meet with our dedicated Spanish teachers as follows:
- K-4th Grade: Spanish class 2x/week
- 5th Grade: Spanish class 4x/week
- 6th-8th Grade: Spanish class 5x/week
National Spanish Exam
Each year, Charlotte Preparatory School students demonstrate advanced Spanish proficiency when our eighth graders take the National Spanish Exam. Invariably, a high percentage earn medals and other recognition. In 2011, Charlotte Preparatory School students' scores were the very best in North Carolina:
- 1st Place in North Carolina
- 2nd Place in North Carolina
- 4th Place in North Carolina
- 5th Place in North Carolina
In addition, more than 50 percent of the Class of 2011 received national recognition in the form of gold, silver or bronze medals.
Cultural Understanding
Our Middle School students have the exciting opportunity to learn about another culture firsthand through the exchange program with our sister school in Ocotlán, Mexico: Centro de Estudios Universitarios Adolfo López Mateos. Younger Charlotte Prep students have the opportunity to delve deeper into the Spanish language and a variety of Spanish-speaking cultures during Charlotte Prep's Spanish immersion summer camps.
In addition to classroom Spanish instruction, Charlotte Prep offers foreign language learning through after-school studios like:
- Hindi
- Mandarin Chinese
- Spanish
