Core Knowledge
The Core Knowledge Sequence is a curriculum designed to give students the comprehensive base of knowledge and understanding that supports lifelong learning. The curriculum includes fundamentals in science, basic principles of government, important events in world history, essential elements of mathematics, widely acknowledged masterpieces of art and music from around the world, and stories and poems passed down from generation to generation.
Charlotte Preparatory School uses the Core Knowledge Sequence as the cornerstone of our social studies, geography, history and science curricula. In addition, some aspects of Core Knowledge are integrated into our students’ math and language arts studies. We believe that this rigorous, content-rich curriculum is the best foundation for a child to develop a coherent understanding of the world.
Core Knowledge:
• Provides a clear outline of content to be learned in succession so knowledge, language and skills build cumulatively.
• Is intrinsically designed to develop decoding, comprehension and critical thinking skills.
• Furnishes teachers with specific, rich and engaging content.
• Includes frequent opportunities to involve children through both listening and speaking, to build these critical skills in tandem with reading and writing.
• Emphasizes cultural literacy, exposing students to a 360-degree view of the world, its people and cultures throughout history.
• “Spirals” over the years by establishing foundations of knowledge early, and layering deeper levels of understanding over time.
